Albania steps up digital defences with new national strategy to protect public data and critical infrastructure from rising cyber threats

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has unveiled a sweeping plan to upgrade national cybersecurity, aiming to protect public institutions and digital services from future attacks. The announcement, made on 18 July, comes in the wake of recent hacking attempts and growing public concern over data security.

Rama outlined a centralised digital defence strategy, which includes stricter protocols for government platforms, international partnerships on cyber intelligence, and a new state agency tasked with safeguarding critical digital infrastructure.

“Cyber threats are now national threats,” Rama stated. “We are no longer just reacting—we are building resilience.”

As Albania pushes forward with digital governance and EU integration, cybersecurity has become a key pillar. Rama’s move signals a regional trend toward stronger digital safeguards as public services move online across the Adria region.
